Remembering Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, 1921-2021

At midday yesterday, the news broke to the world that Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has sadly passed away at 99 years of age.

A statement from North East Lincolnshire Council reads: “It is with much sadness and sorrow that North East Lincolnshire joins the country in mourning following the announcement from Buckingham Palace that His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has passed away.”

An official notice was posted on the gates of Buckingham Palace yesterday to mark the Duke’s death.

Following the release of the sad news, the flag at the palace was lowered to half-mast. Hundreds gathered at the Palace and Windsor Castle to pay their respects and leave tributes.

However, the government has urged the public not to gather or leave tributes to the late Duke at royal residences due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Instead, the Royal Family has asked members of the public to consider donating to a charity instead of leaving flowers for the late Queen Consort.

An online book of condolence has been launched on the official royal website for those who wish to send messages of support.

The Deputy Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor David Hasthorpe, said: “I am very sad to hear of the passing of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and on behalf of North East Lincolnshire, I will be writing to Her Majesty the Queen to offer our thoughts and condolences.

“During his long career, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was involved with hundreds of charities and organisations across the UK. Among other things, The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is something known to many young people in our Borough, and is a fitting reminder to many of his life’s work.

“Our thoughts are with the whole of the Royal Family at this sad time.”

The Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Phillip Jackson, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear the announcement from Buckingham Palace that His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has died.

“I’m sure the people of North East Lincolnshire will join me at this time in paying their respects and remembering him and the work he has been involved in for his country over many decades.”

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that from midday today, a 41-gun salute will take place for Prince Philip in cities including London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, as well as in Gibraltar and at sea from Royal Navy warships.

These will be broadcast online and on television for the public to watch from home.
