The owners of The Minerva pub in Nelson Street, Hull, has expressed their ‘despair’ and ‘disappointment’ at having been threatened with prosecution by Hull City Council.

Pubs in England were permitted to open on Monday, but the Minerva remains closed after Hull City Council refused to grant the premise a pavement licence to provide outdoor seating for its customers.

A blackboard detailing the situation was placed outside of The Minerva on Tuesday 13 April.

It reads:

“It is with huge regret that we are closed for the forseeable future.

“This is not Covid related.

“Hull City Council have refused us permission to use the pavement and road outside The Minerva for outdoor seating for our customers.”

The pub has been warned that if they do not abide the rules they could be prosecuted.

“We can not express enough our disappointment and despair at this decision,” it continued.

“We are so very sorry to all our lovely customers and staff.”

Hundreds of customers have been left disappointed after missing out on bookings, with many branding the decision ‘shocking’ and ‘unfair’.

One commented:

“Shocking call by the council. So sorry for the team at The Minerva, the service is always exceptional.”

“So unfair for landlord and staff,” added another.

“Myself and family live within walking distance and love going to Minerva for the great food and drinks.

“The council should be helping them not killing them off!”

The pub remains shut for the foreseeable future.

Hull City Council have been contacted for a comment.
