Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre on the lookout for artists and designers to make 30th anniversary flags

The Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre are on the lookout for artists, designers and flag makers to make a set of flags to display outside the building to celebrate its 30th birthday.

Local organisation The Culture House and national portfolio organisation of Arts Council England, Walk the Plank, are working together with the Fishing Heritage Centre to commission the flags.

The final design will be unveiled on the museum’s anniversary during Whit Week 2021 and used for the Festival of the Sea in July, as well as various other local events.

A statement on The Culture House website reads: “Artists/illustrators in North East Lincolnshire and beyond are encouraged to respond to a brief which invites fresh and bold imagery inspired by fish, fishing and the sea… the decor will be used across diverse future events in Grimsby’s calendar.

“Your proposal will need to cover the creation of a set of durable flags/banners, which are weatherproof in terms of rain and UV damage, on the basis of being used up to four times per year for three years, and should include rigging equipment and storage bags/boxes.

“You will be expected to be present at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre for the unveiling and be available for press calls linked to the anniversary.

“Please send us links to your work, and a short proposal of how you would approach this commission, with a budget which outlines how many flags, made using which materials/techniques, and confirmation that you can make the finished flags by the end of May 2021 ready for installation.”

To discuss anything about the requirements, local artists or designers can email Liz Pugh from Walk the Plank at

Proposals should be sent to by 21 April.

The selected artist will be confirmed by 26 April, allowing four weeks for the design and making process.
