Boris Johnson to meet football officials later over breakaway group to discuss the proposed European Super League.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid could be expelled from the Champions League by the end of the week, according to a Uefa member, as the fallout from the announcement of the controversial European Super League continues. There could also be consequences for the other teams of the breakaway group.
The “founding clubs” are AC Milan, Arsenal, Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.
Boris Johnson described the new league, which includes six leading English clubs, as “ludicrous”.
The 12 founding members of the league face a fierce backlash after unveiling proposals for a breakaway tournament.
The new tournament has been criticised as a closed competition that will destroy clubs at all levels, but its chairman disagrees.
