Scunthorpe’s longest COVID-19 ventilated survivor leaves ICU

Martin Staves is Scunthorpe’s longest COVID-19 ventilated survivor having spent 61 days in ICU.

Martin was applauded by staff as he was discharged from the Intensive Care Unit at Scunthorpe hospital.

Amanda Holmes, ICU manager at Scunthorpe, said “Martin is our longest COVID-19 ventilated survivor having spent 61 days with us.

His wife, Dawn, brought in cake, tea, coffee and biscuits for the staff as a thank you.

Dawn said “Once again, I cannot thank you enough for saving my husband’s life and never giving up on him. I will never forget what you all have done. One day, Martin will walk on your ward to see you all and say thank you.”

Martin was discharged from the ICU on Tuesday, April 20.

A heart felt video of Martin leaving ICU and masked staff lining the corridors to applaud him has been shared on social media.

The staff at SGH were so pleased to see that Martin was on the road to recovery and so was his wife Dawn.
