Inquiry into government’s Covid-19 response to start early next year

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has today announced that an independent inquiry into the Government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic will begin next Spring.

Speaking in the House of Commons today, the PM said: “Amid such tragedy, the state has an obligation to examine its actions as rigorously and candidly as possible.

“This process will place the state’s actions under the microscope.”

Mr Johnson said the inquiry will begin in Spring 2022 due to the likelihood of there being a “surge” in Covid infections this winter, despite Opposition leader Keir Starmer insisting that the inquiry be carried out “as soon as possible”.

The inquiry will be set up under the Inquiries Act of 2005.

The PM added: “This inquiry must be able to look at the events of the last year in the cold light of day and identify the key issues that will make a difference for the future.

“Free to scrutinise every document to hear from all the key players and analyse and learn from the breadth of our response.

“That’s the right way, I think, to get the answers that the people of this country deserve and to ensure that our United Kingdom is better prepared for any future pandemic.

“I think we owe it to the country to have as much transparency as we can.”
