Scunthorpe litter pickers are out in force

Jayne, founder of the Scunthorpe Litter Pickers group on Facebook has been litter picking for years!

Jayne said ‘I set up the group over 9 years ago when only a few of us went litter picking after the Scunthorpe Half Marathon. Never did I imagine the group to expand like it has!

‘At the start of the pandemic the group had around 50 or 60 members and now has over 700 which is really hard to believe. It seems that the first lockdown encouraged people to get out the house and so, on their daily exercise many took to litter picking.

Jayne went on to add ‘North Lincolnshire Council and the neighbourhood services have really supported the group by providing people with bin bags, gloves and pickers – I believe the pink bin bags have helped identify who we are.’

Even if you only pick up one piece of litter a day, it all helps

She added ‘It’s also great to see local businesses supporting us. In recent weeks, OSI Food Solutions LTD kindly supported us and gifted £150 for the community. We haven’t decided what we will spend the money on yet but we have discussed about possibly getting child friendly kits for our younger team!’

‘There are so many people out there who deserve a huge shout out for their hours of picking. It’s great to see people just getting out and socialising while helping our community and local wildlife.’

You can buy pickers from Trotters Trading, B and M, Home Bargains, Poundstretcher etc. when they are in stock from around £3. They are not essential but will save you bending and assist grabbing that hard to reach litter in hedges.

If you don’t have a hoop you can roll the top of your bag down which helps keep it open. If you pick locally from your own home you could always collect litter in a reusable bag and deposit in your green bin and recycling.

Equipment can be acquired by contacting North Lincs Council by email Neighbourhoodservices@northlincs.gov.uk Please only request what you NEED.
