Abandoned turtle being “thrown around” in People’s Park has now gone to forever home

Following our story about the turtle that was rescued by a member of the public after it was found being thrown around by kids in People’s Park, it has now been revealed that the animal has gone to its forever home.

Shelly Crofts of Peaksfield Avenue, Grimsby, contacted Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue after her 12-year-old daughter Jess brought the turtle home after she rescued it from the children in the park last Sunday.

Shelly said: “My daughter and her friends Lexi Werrett, 11, and Beth Browne, 14, rescued it from two girls swinging it about in a hat. They asked the young girls what they had and they said they had found it near the pond.

“They saw it drop to the floor and the girls were giggling, so they took it off the girls and bought it home to me. They know I’ll help any animal.

“We made a mini pond and sunbathing deck in the bath until I could get him to someone from Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue. He stayed with us until Wednesday. I definitely miss seeing him, he was lovely. I’ve only got a spare two-foot tank and he needed a bigger one.

“I’ve got no idea how he got to be in the pond in the park. I’d hazard a guess that someone dumped him in there. No idea if he had a name, but we affectionately called him Terry.”

The post on the Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue Facebook page reads: “A bit of an unusual rescue to come in…

“This guy arrived with our team after a group of kids had been found throwing him around People’s Park.

“Thankfully, the daughter of the woman who brought him saw this happening and took him home to get help. What a hero!

“It’s now being monitored and treated as required by our friends who have a lot of knowledge in this area.”

The post received numerous horrified reactions and comments from members of the public, with one person commenting: “They need punishment. If a pet owner or an adult was caught they would be punished so why should these kids get away with it? Hopefully someone will take it further.”

“Terry” the turtle has now been rehomed with someone who specialises in turtles and terrapins.

We’re wishing him a speedy recovery.
