By Doncaster hit by dramatic flash floods
Several roads were closed yesterday evening after Doncaster was hit after storms resulted in flash floods which left streets underwater.
Videos and photographs posted on social media showed cars driving through deep surface water on streets following the storm.
A team of workmen from Doncaster Council were quickly deployed, and spent much of the evening in Adwick cleaning mud and debris in order to reopen the area as quickly as possible.
Speaking last night, a spokesperson for the council said:
“Our teams have been out this evening, cleaning the area to get things back open as quickly as possible.”
Things were expected to reopen at 10.30pm.
Last year the Environment Agency spent around £6m to repair a 40 mile stretch of river bank caused by floods in Doncaster.
Almost 1,000 homes and 565 businesses across South Yorkshire were devastated last November.
The regions flood defences have been a subject of much debate in recent years, with City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis branding the funds allocated for flood defence and prevention measures as ‘inadequate’.
He has said that a second wave of financial intervention is necessary to protect the county and prevent disasters, suggesting that the county needs funding worth at least £270m to make a real impact.
