NAViGO on the lookout for veterans in North East Lincolnshire to conduct mental health research

NAViGO are still looking to speak to veterans in North East Lincolnshire as part of the ‘Restoring Our Veterans’ Mental Health’ project.

The leading mental health support provider in the borough is “keen” to develop a mental health support service based on the needs of local veterans and their families.

Professor Zaffer Iqbal, NAViGO’s clinical director of psychological services is leading the project.

He said that a veteran’s time in service can affect their mental health in a range of complex ways.

“There is often a range of mental health and social care needs that veterans have from their time in service – anxiety and depression, physical injury, substance misuse and PTSD,” he explained.

“A person’s time in service can really affect their civilian life, their new route into employment, their adjustment into society and their relationships with family and friends.

“And while, there are lots of national and local services there isn’t really anything that offers that cohesive local assistance which is why we’re really keen to work with ex-service personnel to create a bespoke service for all veterans dedicated to their mental health and wellbeing.”

The Ministry of Defence conducted research which shows military personnel requiring assessment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma has doubled over the past decade.

According to NAViGO, the team behind the project will be “working hard” in the coming months to speak to as many veterans in North East Lincolnshire as they can.

Zaffer added: “It’s important that we hear about everyone’s experiences so that we can use this information to make sure there are no gaps in providing mental health and social care support.”
