Celebrating Pride month this June

June marks the 51st celebration of Pride Month – a time when millions of people come together in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

LGBTQ+ Pride Month occurs to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969 in New York City. As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact LGBT people have had in the world.

The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement outside the bar on Christopher Street, in neighboring streets and in nearby Christopher Park. The Stonewall Riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.

Millions of people frequently turn up to events each year, though many of 2020’s events were either cancelled or moved online due to Covid-19.

The Oxford Languages dictionary defines gay pride as, “Confidence, self-respect, and solidarity as expressed by gay people, associated with openness about one’s own sexual identity, and the celebration of gay culture and history.”

Rainbow flags have become an iconic symbol of gay rights and the LGBTQ+ community’s diversity and are commonplace at Pride marches.
