Controversial white palm tree in Cleethorpes may not go ahead
The controversial 72ft-tall white palm tree in Cleethorpes that was set to dominate the North Promenade may not actually be going ahead, it was revealed yesterday by the Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Phillip Jackson.
When asked about the White Palm sculpture, which was designed by artist Wolfgang Weileder and was taller than the Angel of the North, Phillip Jackson told David Burns on BBC Radio Humberside that it is ‘still in the mix’ but that the council are ‘looking at the various options’.
He said: “We’re still looking at the various options associated with that because we’re looking at wider aspects of the potential regeneration of the North Prom now, so that is still in the mix potentially.”
When asked if that means the sculpture ‘might not happen’, Cllr Jackson responded: “Like I said, we’re looking at the various options and the tourism opportunities for the North Prom in Cleethorpes.”
He confirmed that an announcement will be made in the ‘near future’ about whether or not the White Palm sculpture will be going ahead.
