Armed Forces Day in North Lincolnshire: here’s what’s on

Armed Forces Day is on 26 June, and as always North Lincolnshire Council will be raising the flag in honour of those who are serving or have served, along with their families, cadets and reservists.

As celebrations need to comply with current restrictions, there are a host of virtual events, including videos from those who have served, a specially planted flowerbed in Scunthorpe’s Central Park and walks that take in some of our region’s rural war memorials.

NLC will also be showcasing an interactive trail at Normanby Country Park, paying tribute to our local Reserves at 146 Divisional Support Company REME and streaming free live bootcamp sessions.

Young people in North Lincolnshire are being invited to show their support for the Armed Forces community by writing a themed acrostic poem.

Pupils have the chance to win fabulous prizes by entering the competition, which has been organised as part of the council’s commitment to Armed Forces Day, taking place this year on 26 June 2021.

For the competition, children are tasked with writing an acrostic poem which relates to Armed Forces Day. In an acrostic, the first letter of each line spells a word. The word is the subject of the poem – this could be ‘soldier’, ‘marine’, ‘salute’ or any relevant word of the young person’s choice.

The competition is open to entrants from North Lincolnshire schools in Key Stages 1-4 (Year 1 to Year 11), with a first, second and third prize selected from each key stage.

With a top prize of a £50 high street voucher as well as a £50 book voucher for their school – the closing date is 7 June 2021 – good luck!
