North East Lincolnshire Council new litter strategy

Council aims to tackle litter problem in North East Lincolnshire once and for all

North East Lincolnshire Council are set to adopt a new litter strategy in a bid to take better care of the environment and take more action against people who drop litter.

Cabinet members will meet on Wednesday to discuss the new strategy, what it hopes to achieve, and why it is needed in North East Lincolnshire.

The new strategy ties in with the Waste Strategy established in 2020, and builds on the council’s commitment to manage waste and recycling effectively.

It will focus on the causes and types of litter, how the council manages litter and the council’s ambitions for the future – which will include enforcement against those who drop litter, and education on litter management through work with schools and community groups.

Progress of the new strategy will be closely monitored in the coming months.

Between 2016 and 2017, it is estimated that local authorities in England spent £682 million, or £29 per household dealing with litter.

In North East Lincolnshire, it’s estimated that around £1.5 million is spent on street cleansing each year.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, has said everyone in the borough has a “part to play” in keeping the environment clean and tidy.

He added: “We already do a lot of work to tackle litter and encourage people to care for the environment, the new strategy provides a framework for our approach in the future and takes advantage of national best practice.

“One element of this is making sure we have the right bins in the right location. For example, in some areas we are looking into the introduction of bins with underground storage that can hold much more rubbish than a standard litter bin.”

The new strategy by North East Lincolnshire Council was prompted by the government’s National Litter Strategy for England (2017) and the Waste Resources Action Programme’s (WRAP’s) ‘Right Bin in the Right Place’ guidance published in October 2020.
