Former ISIS bride Shamima Begum pleads with government to let her return home to UK

Former ISIS bride Shamima Begum has begged to return home to the UK, branding herself ‘a dumb kid’ when she left the country to join the terror organisation in 2015.

Speaking to Andrew Drury for his film Danger Zone from the al-Roj prison camp in Syria, when asked if she had a message for the UK government, Begum said: “Can I come home please, pretty please?”

In recent times, the Bethnal Green schoolgirl has said she was brainwashed by extremists and that she doesn’t think she was a terrorist.

She said: “I don’t think I was a terrorist. I think I was just a dumb kid who made one mistake.

“I personally don’t think that I need to be rehabilitated, but I would want to help other people be rehabilitated. I would love to help.”

In February 2019, former Home Secretary Sajid Javid revoked her British citizenship on national security grounds shortly after she was found nine months pregnant in a Syrian refugee camp.

At the time, she begged to be rescued and brought back home to the UK, but told reporters she didn’t regret joining ISIS.

Tonight (Tuesday 15 June), a new documentary titled The Return: Life After ISIS will be released, in which Begum details her struggles of being pregnant and caring for her two children while fleeing attacks on ISIS territory.

She said: “There were so many bombings and there was a shortage of food and diapers and milk. I didn’t have breast milk so I had to worry about every next can of milk I would need to get for my daughter.”

In February, Begum lost a Supreme Court appeal to return to the UK after her decision to travel to Syria led to her British citizenship being revoked.
