Boris Johnson may push July 21 Freedom Day back to July 5

Boris Johnson may push June 21 Freedom Day back to July 5.

Covid-19 coronavirus restrictions could be lifted in England on July 5 – two weeks earlier than the July 19 date announced by Boris Johnson – reports suggest.

The current measures were due to be eased on June 21 as part of the UK Government’s ‘Road Map’ out of lockdown – but this was pushed back by four weeks due to concerns over the speedy spread of the Delta variant, first identified in India.

However, Downing Street is considering bringing this forward by a fortnight claims the Daily Mail – saying there is “growing evidence that assumptions used by government scientists to justify delaying Freedom Day were too pessimistic”.

It quotes an unnamed source saying: “‘The decision to delay reopening was so finely balanced – probably the most difficult decision of the whole pandemic – that the PM wanted a review point built in so that if things did change we could move sooner.

“No-one wants these restrictions in place for a day longer than necessary.”

People aged 18 and over in England are being invited to book their first Covid-19 jab in what the NHS has described as a “watershed moment”.

About 1.5 million texts are due to be sent to people aged 18 to 20 on Friday (today).

PM Boris Johnson said the speed of the programme was “one of our country’s greatest collective achievements”.
