Man charged with common assault of Professor Chris Whitty
Following the alleged harassment of England’s chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, a man has been charged with common assault.
The incident took place on the evening of Sunday 27 June in St. James’ Park in London, in which the professor was accosted by a group of men.
23-year-old Lewis Hughes of Romford, east London, was charged yesterday over the incident, according to the Metropolitan Police.
In a statement, the force said: At approximately 19:20hrs on Sunday, 27 June officers in St James’ Park became aware of a man being accosted by a group of men.
“Officers subsequently reviewed video footage which emerged after the incident and the matter was referred to the Public Order Crime Team. Enquiries continue.”
The video was shared across social media channels, and shows Professor Whitty attempting to free himself from the two men.
Mr Hughes will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 30 July.
Since the footage emerged, he has lost his job as an estate agent, and has apologised for any “upset I have caused”.
“If I made [Prof Whitty] feel uncomfortable, which it does look like I did, then I am sorry to him for that,” he told the Sun newspaper.
