Grimsby speech therapists to walk the length of New Zealand in incredible fundraiser

A group of paediatric speech and language therapists from Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby are embarking on an incredible fundraising challenge that will see them walk the length of New Zealand – before the end of July.

The team of 12 have set themselves the challenging goal of walking, running or cycling 3.5 million steps before the end of the month in order to raise money for The Health Tree Foundation, the charity for the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust.

The Health Tree Foundation provides acute hospital and community services to 400,000 people in Grimsby and across the region.

Emily Mens from the Speech and Language Therapy Team said: “The team have been working from home a lot more providing telehealth support since March 2020 because of the pandemic.

She said the team decided on New Zealand because it’s somewhere that each of them would love to visit.

By using an app called World Walking, which tracks the team’s steps and gives them Google Street Views of where they are in New Zealand, the team are using the challenge as an opportunity to explore the country.

“This fundraiser has given us the opportunity to be outdoors. We can’t travel at the moment, so we chose to walk the length of New Zealand because it’s a place we’d all like to visit. This way we can explore the country virtually,” Emily added.

The team have so far completed 7% of their challenge

“The Health Tree Foundation has always supported our team with the newest assessments and toys.

“We want everyone to contribute what they’re able to and achieve our step goal as a team. We’re excited and motivated to reach our 3.5 million steps this year!”
