Stories, photographs and memories of iconic Kasbah area needed for Heritage Open Day
Each year in September, places up and down the country open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history as part of the national Heritage Open Days scheme, including the Kasbah area of Grimsby.
Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,000 local people and organisations, and thousands of volunteers.
Between 10 and 19 September, many places across North East Lincolnshire will offer both virtual and in-person events under a specific theme titled “Voices of Lincolnshire – Stories Unheard”, focusing on unheard stories that may have contributed to the local heritage and culture.
It is an opportunity for people to see hidden places free of charge, and find out more about their local area.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year the event that is usually held at Grimsby docks will be held online.
In line with this year’s theme, the Kasbah event will feature stories, photographs and memories from people who worked down dock or visited the area over the last 50 or more years.
North East Lincolnshire Council are urging locals to get in touch and share their own memories of this iconic and once-thriving area to use as part of the event.
A NELC spokesperson said: “Do you have a story you’d like to share, or perhaps some old photographs of the buildings down dock that you used to visit or work in?
“The team are especially interested to hear about any Kasbah myths and legends! Maybe you used to see the ghosts of former trawlermen heading out to sea, or perhaps you were known as the fastest filleter on the dock?”
Councillor Callum Procter, Cabinet member for heritage, said: “The port was, and is, so key to the lives of so many families in North East Lincolnshire, and it’s important that memories of the port as it used to be aren’t lost in the sands of time.
“Working with partners, we’re striving to make use of the buildings on the port once again and create a new community, but in doing this, we must remember our collective past.”
