More than 93 percent of adults in Britain now have Covid-19 antibodies, study says

Over 93 percent of adults in England, Scotland and Wales now have Covid-19 antibodies, according to the results of a new study.

The figure is lower in Northern Ireland, where 89.1 percent of adults have the coronavirus-fighting particles in their system, either as a result of previously being infected with the virus or from being vaccinated against it.

In England, the figure is 94.2 percent, compared to 93.5 percent in Scotland and 93.2 percent in Wales.

A bulletin from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) reads: “Having antibodies can help to prevent individuals from getting the same infection again, or if they do get infected, they are less likely to have severe symptoms.

“Once infected or vaccinated, antibodies remain in the blood at low levels and can decline over time.

“The length of time antibodies remain at detectable levels in the blood is not fully known.”

The figures from the ONS are based on random blood tests of people aged 16 or over in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

This comes after a government adviser suggested that Covid-19 booster jabs may be needed for some people in the future.

Officials are set to meet today to discuss the potential booster campaign and people who might “really need” another vaccine.

Yesterday, a further 111 people in the UK died from coronavirus, while a further 33,904 people tested positive.
