Construction of SEND school to begin in October

North Lincolnshire Council has released further information regarding their plans to open a new SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) school in Scunthorpe.

A new SEND Annual Report details how children aged 0 to 25 in North Lincolnshire have gained several successes in education as well as health and care during the pandemic as they prepare for adulthood.

The council and their partner agencies have made it their aim over the past 18 months to improve things for those with SEND.

A triumphant bid to the Department for Education (DfE) will lead to the development of a new £10m SEND Free School set to be built within the next year.

The council have said that 60 places will be available for those over 16 years of age who “have profound and multiple learning disabilities, speech, language and communication needs and autism spectrum or neurodiversity needs.”

Building works are suspected to begin in October with hopes that the school will officially open in September 2022.

The new school, which will be run by Wellspring Academy Trust, aims to improve these youths’ skills in areas such as employment.

Leader of the NLC Cllr Rob Waltham said: “Over the past year we have redoubled our efforts to ensure all children and young people in North Lincolnshire get the best opportunities to develop and achieve.

“The Government continues to support our ambitious plans on this key priority area and they have funded the construction of the new Wellspring Academy – which will have a huge impact.”

Inclusive nurturing provisions have also been obtained for Coritani Academy, Frederick Gough School and Winterton Community Academy in order to help SEND pupils with their social, mental and emotional needs.

Transition plans for children returning to school/college have also been put in place.

A digital Education, Health and Care Plan Hub was also launched online to make it easier for special needs and disabled children to receive advice from professionals when they need it most.

The great news sparks hopes for further plans and possibilities with regard to the support available for SEND youths in the North Lincolnshire area.
