Scunthorpe Anchor Amateur Swimming Club is back with a splash!

Scunthorpe Anchor Amateur Swimming Club has made a triumphant return to the pool after multiple lockdowns and restrictions keeping them out of the water.

The club invited swimmers from all three squads, Development, Potential and Performance, to a training session at The Pods on Wednesday 8 September.

The club recently made a long-awaited return to county-level swimming at the ‘Festival of Swimming’ at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, competing alongside clubs such as City of Sheffield and the City of Leeds.

Scunthorpe’s Swim club did exceptionally well, with top ten places (in their age groups) achieved by swimmers Miles Kearns, Niamh Potter, Layton Thorpe, Yash Gandhi, Olivia Martin, Chloe Simpson, Ella Summers, Lauren Swinbourne and Rafael Santos.

Swimmers Olivia Martin, Chloe Simpson and Yash Gandhi were all phenomenal, gaining top 3 positions with Olivia Martin coming 1st in the 400m Individual Medley.

Swimmers from the club also competed at the Doncaster Dartes September Sprints meet at John Charles Aquatics Centre in Leeds on Sunday 12 September, winning a trophy for ‘Top Club’!

Next year the club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary, a huge milestone for the club which was conceived back in 1972!

Head coach Steve Vaughan said: “We would like to extend our thanks to the council and especially The Pods and The Riddings swimming pools for enabling this to happen at what must have been a very difficult time for them.”

“The squads have been able to return to a generous number of hours in the pool, which is so crucial for the success and continuation of a swimming club. They have also enabled us to do this in a COVID safe way as soon as the pools were able to open. We are very grateful for this- the pandemic has been a challenge in every way and the council’s support has enabled the club to survive and come back to compete alongside the bigger city clubs.”
