Young foster child provided scholarship to independent school

An 11-year-old girl from Grimsby has set her sights on Oxford University as she dreams of a career in design or mathematics.

The Children’s Services Department at North East Lincolnshire Council is running a scholarship scheme for children in care which has helped fund the young girl’s costs as she begins her journey at Hymers College, an independent school in Hull.

The girl was placed into full-time care at five-years-old but eventually found a longer-term foster carer in Hull.

She has been to a total of four primary schools throughout her childhood.

At 11-years-old, she was offered the chance to take the Hymers’ entry exam and has high hopes for her future which includes going to Oxford University.

The council and her foster carer’s hard work has begun to secure the young girl’s future, providing her with opportunities that most children in care are not as lucky to have.

The council’s Portfolio Holder for Children, Education and Young People, Cllr Ian Lindley, said: “We can only wish this young girl the best luck in the world, although hearing her story, I am not sure she needs luck as she will achieve her ambition on determination, attitude and intelligence.

“This makes the hard work of our teams worthwhile, to be able to offer the support a young person needs to step up, and to achieve.”

He added: “Our ability to be able to financially help her and others, is absolutely what we should be striving to do as we move forward.”
