Doncaster Council supports Recycle Week campaign

The first day of the Recycle Week campaign begins today, Monday 20 September, which brings councils and locals together in support of creating a greener future for not just the town, but the world as well.

Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield Councils have teamed up with Recycle Now, a national recycling campaign that promotes recycling in the local area.

Residents are being encouraged to protect the environment by altering their recycling habits.

TV presenter, Invictus Games Medallist and Strictly Come Dancing star JJ Chalmers has become an ambassador for the event in a bid to spread the word and improve the environment for the community.

Recycle Now’s research revealed that nearly nine out of 10 people have converted to recycling, but 55% of households still put recyclable items in their normal rubbish bins.

This includes things like foil, aerosols, plastic shampoo/conditioner bottles, plastic trays and cleaning/bleach bottles.

Recycle Now brings together retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, national and local governments and the media to highlight the impact not recycling has on the planet.

Campaign Manager for Recycle Now, Craig Stephens, told Doncaster Council: “This year we’re focused on how recycling can help fight climate change and how, by recycling even better, we can have a bigger impact on our environment.”

Chair of the Joint Waste Board in South Yorkshire, Cllr Mark Houlbrook from Doncaster Council, said: “Recycling currently saves 18 million tonnes of CO2 every year, which is the same as taking 12 million cars off the road, and we’d like to thank our residents for doing their bit.

“But if we can recycle more and better, it will have an even bigger impact on the environment.”

The campaign will be promoting on social media as well as throughout Doncaster.

For the second year running, major brands have been donating to help fund Recycling Week, which includes Amazon, British Soft Drinks Association, Coca-Cola, the Co-op, McDonald’s and Waitrose.
