North East Lincolnshire Council ‘Step It Up’ for Recycle Week

This week, North East Lincolnshire Council is encouraging locals to ‘Step It Up’ for Recycle Week in a bid to fight climate change and protect the environment.

Recycle Week begins today, Monday 20 September, and sees several councils and locals teaming up with Recycle Now, a national recycling campaign that promotes recycling in the local area.

Residents are being encouraged to protect the environment by altering their recycling habits.

This comes a year after households received two new wheelie bins to improve their recycling.

Recycle Now brings together retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, national and local governments and the media to highlight the impact not recycling has on the planet.

The Step It Up campaign will be promoting on social media as well as throughout Grimsby.

For the second year running, major brands have been donating to help fund Recycling Week, which includes Amazon, British Soft Drinks Association, Coca-Cola, the Co-op, McDonald’s and Waitrose.

TV presenter, Invictus Games Medallist and Strictly Come Dancing star JJ Chalmers has become an ambassador for the event in a bid to spread the word and improve the environment for the community.

Recycle Now’s research revealed that nearly nine out of 10 people have converted to recycling.

The amount of dry recycling collected from households went up from 790 tonnes per month in 2019 to 843 tonnes per month in 2020 and now stands at 1,071 tonnes per month.

However, up to 55% of households still put recyclable items in their normal rubbish bins.

This includes things like foil, aerosols, plastic shampoo/conditioner bottles, plastic trays and cleaning/bleach bottles.

Cllr Stewart Swinburn, the Council’s portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, said:

“Our new recycling bins are helping households recycle more than ever, but there’s still a lot more to do.

“Now is a great time to check you’re recycling as much as you can.

“We’re helping people recycle on the go with a series of fantastic sculptures along Cleethorpes beachfront and dedicated recycling bins around the resort.

“The food waste pilot we launched in April is also proving a big success in reducing the amount of rubbish people put in their green bins.”

He added: “A huge amount of energy and material resources goes into making a plastic bottle or an aluminium drink can, so it’s important that we make the most of them. This helps reduce the damage caused to the natural environment.”

Council education officers will also be at Freeman Street Market from 9:00am till 1:00pm on Tuesday 21 September, as well as Top Town Market from 9:00am till 1:00pm on Friday 24 September, to give locals tips on the dos and don’ts of recycling.
