Schools invited to bid to be part of ‘Autism in Schools’ pilot

Schools in North East Lincolnshire are being invited to bid to take part in a pilot programme, ‘Autism in Schools’, which seeks to improve the support young, autistic people receive.

The programme is part of a pilot that is working in partnership with NHS England.

The pilot, ‘Autism in Schools’, is accepting up to ten local schools for their project.

Their aim is to create a more autism-friendly atmosphere in schools by raising awareness and assigning specialist practitioners.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in childhood diagnoses for those with autism.

According to the National Council on Severe Autism, 2.25% of school students in England were identified as having autism in 2019, so more support needs to be in place for them.

Councillor Ian Lindley, portfolio holder for children, education and skills at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “I’m really pleased that we have won this bid – we’re the only local authority in the Humber Coast and Vale region to be included in this programme so it’s great news.

“Over the last few years, we’ve been completely redesigning our approach to supporting children and young people with autism, so it feels right that we are now able to work with schools to make sure that they are inclusive, friendly and supportive places for young people with autism.

“This pilot is open to all local schools, but we can only include up to ten schools in the pilot, so we’re encouraging them to get in early with their bids.

“Once the programme is complete, we will be sharing the learning with all of our local schools.

“We’re also looking for any young people with autism, as well as any parents and carers of young people with autism, to get involved.”
