Train to teach in North Lincolnshire

The next round of applications opens on 12 October 2021 for people wanting to stay local and train to teach in North Lincolnshire through the North Lincolnshire SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) Partnership.

The partnership offers full-time, school-based teacher training programmes for those interested in training to become either primary or secondary teachers.

Participants benefit from expert tuition and support provided by mentors and professional tutors, with central training sessions at the UCNL in Scunthorpe.

A bulk of the time will be spent in school, giving trainees opportunities to develop their teaching skills, putting into practice the theory learnt in central training.

Both primary and secondary programmes follow the school academic year, starting in September and running until the end of June.

Trainees can look forward to receiving Qualified Teacher Status along with the award of a Post Graduate Certificate in Education.

Key elements of the training include:

  • A core Professional Studies Programme delivered locally at the centrally based venue within the UCNL in Scunthorpe
  • A fully integrated academic module at Master’s level of study, leading to a Post Graduate Certificate in Education
  • High quality school placements to acquire subject and pedagogical understanding
  • Opportunities to observe the best practice in a variety of subjects in leading schools across North Lincolnshire
  • High quality training provided by specialist teachers, trainers and senior school staff
  • Excellent support and guidance from expert mentors who provide clear and informative feedback as part of the ongoing assessment

Successful trainees have an excellent chance of securing their first teaching post, with over 95 per cent of the 2020/2021 cohort now employed in a teaching role in North Lincolnshire.

Carrieanne Pitois, who completed her training in July 2016 and is now an assistant headteacher, said of the programme: “For me, the idea of gaining practical hands-on classroom experience, alongside developing an understanding of the underpinning practice, seems a fantastic way to develop my knowledge.

“Over the course of the year, the North Lincolnshire SCITT programme provided a broad spectrum of training, encompassing all areas of the curriculum.

“The North Lincolnshire SCITT programme, by far, goes above and beyond to ensure that trainees received appropriate, up to date and personalised training, which enables them to progress as teachers.”

You can apply for the next training courses starting in September 2022 from 12 October 2021 when applications will be open for places on the Primary (5 to 11) programme or for those wanting to follow the Secondary (11 to 16) programme, in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History and Physical Education.

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children and families, said: “We’re always on the lookout for new teachers in North Lincolnshire to provide the best outcomes for children and young people.

“The training provided by North Lincolnshire SCITT Partnership is a popular choice as it follows an apprenticeship model of training, whereby trainees develop their techniques and skills alongside tutors in the classroom and ‘real life’ teacher experiences during school placements.

“We have a really high success rate of trainees completing the course and going on to secure a teaching job afterwards.

“If anyone has been considering going into teaching, find out more details to find out if it’s the right route for you. It doesn’t matter if you are just finishing university or looking for a career change, get in touch.”
