Over 1,100 jobs to be created by new Doncaster Central Plaza

Peel L&P’s new Central Plaza near Doncaster Sheffield Airport will create more than 1,100 jobs for nearby communities as plans are approved by Doncaster Council’s Planning Committee.

25 acres of land will be used to develop a space for retail, leisure, food and drink, community and health as well as new homes in Hayfield Green near Auckley, Doncaster.

The new plaza will also include shops, community facilities, offices, apartments, restaurants and up to three hotels.

It is part of Peel L&P’s £1.7 billion GatewayEast project which aims to encourage sustainable social and economic growth.

It will create 35,000 jobs and 3,000 new homes in the Sheffield region.

The plaza will be placed near Peel L&P’s planned Innovation Quarter, a manufacturing and logistics hub.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport will benefit from the new development as flyers will be able to access the new hotels and petrol station.

Passenger numbers are expected to increase by 56% next year due to new, low-cost flights and pandemic restrictions lifting.

The overall plaza development should bring £250 million to the local economy each year.

1,160 full-time jobs will be created for local residents, workers and businesses.

New wildflowers, woodland edging and other green infrastructures are planned for the development.

Neal Biddle, Development Director for Peel L&P’s GatewayEast, reported: “We’re working in partnership with DSA, Doncaster Council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to create a hub for innovation, green industries and high-tech manufacturing at GatewayEast, building on the success of South Yorkshire’s industrial past to attract further innovation investment from across the globe.

“This is alongside prime logistics space to accommodate the increasing fast-paced demand for consumer products and business supplies, providing a broad range of job opportunities.”

Daniel Fell, Chief Executive Officer at Doncaster Chamber, added: “GatewayEast and Doncaster Sheffield Airport are strategically important sites for business growth and innovation in South Yorkshire as well as the North of England.

“The Central Plaza development complete with homes, local amenities, retail, leisure and office space is a much-needed asset to support this growth and this planning approval is a step in the right direction to help secure future investment in the area.”
