Over 250 litter fines issued in North Lincolnshire in a month
In August and September enforcement officers handed out 251 fixed penalty notices for dropped litter.
North Lincolnshire Council, in partnership with LA Support, stated they have a zero-tolerance policy to litter and that they will use a wide range of powers to target environmental crime.
Environmental crime includes dog fouling, throwing rubbish from a car and dropping cigarette ends.
Fines are £150 which will be reduced to £100 if paid within 28 days.
While the majority of the fines were issued in Scunthorpe, litterers in Ashby, Brigg, Broughton, Barton, Bottesford, Keadby and Wroot were also targeted.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “While I applaud the work of our enforcement officers in helping keep our communities clean, the number of people dropping litter on the street is just not acceptable.
“We are determined to clean up North Lincolnshire and will keep on fining litter louts until we do.”
The council spends more than a million pounds a year cleaning up other people’s waste, this includes emptying more than 1,800 bins a week and cleaning up around 31,500 miles of roadside verges and footpaths.
As well as being an eyesore, rubbish and litter is both a health and environmental hazard.
The council are urging those who see someone dropping litter to take photos or video footage and upload it to their website.
Hundreds of volunteers carry out regular litter picks in their local areas with equipment provided by the council.
