Shock as van drives into gaggle of geese at Cleethorpes Boating Lake, leaving one dead

Local residents have been left horrified after a person driving a van is reported to have driven into a gaggle of geese at Cleethorpes Boating Lake at around 5.15pm yesterday evening, killing one and injuring five.

Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue took to their Facebook page to alert the public about what had happened, after a member of the public witnessed the shocking incident and reported it to both Humberside Police and the voluntary organisation.

The woman told Gi Media: “Me and my husband were sat near the geese just talking when we noticed the Ford Transit Van drove past us slowly. The driver was on his phone, then the next minute he started laughing to his mate in the van and put his foot down towards the geese, running quite a few over and killing one.

“It happened so quick and both me and my husband were in shock and hearing the geese making them noises was just awful.

“The driver spun around and they both were laughing, like it was some sick joke. I don’t believe for one minute they saw us, as my husband got his phone out and recorded them leaving. He put his foot down when he realised that he was being recorded.

“I’ve never seen anything that awful in my life, both me and my husband wished that we could have done more.”

Now, officers are looking for the driver of the van, after a clear picture which displayed the vehicle’s registration was taken by the person who witnessed the incident.

A spokesperson for Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue wrote: “We’re looking for information and any further witnesses to an incident at Cleethorpes Boating Lake where this van is reported to have deliberately driven through a flock of geese killing one and injuring around five others!

“Our team have been on scene and have confirmed one death and are looking for the other injured birds.

“If you have any further information, a location, you witnessed this or you’re the driver, please call 101 using log number: 460 24/10/21.

“Furthermore, if you spot any injured geese around the lake please do make us aware by sending us a message so we can get them help.

“The police have had a very supportive response to this incident, they arrived promptly (including a wildlife trained officer) and are doing all they can at the moment to locate the van.

“A huge thank you to the member of the public whose quick actions to record the van driving out allowed for a clear reg to be captured. Multiple witnesses have also spoken to the police to confirm what happened, which is a big help.”

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “An investigation is currently ongoing following an incident yesterday (Sunday 24 October) at 5:15pm on Kings Road, Cleethorpes.

“It is reported that a car was driving dangerously and as a result is believed to have collided with geese in the area.”
