London design agency appointed by NELC to create brand new “masterplan” for Cleethorpes

A London-based company has been appointed to create a brand-new masterplan for Cleethorpes with the aim of transforming the resort and creating a “vibrant town” where people enjoy living and visiting.

HemingwayDesign, a design agency based in Wembley, has been responsible for many previous coastal regeneration projects across England’s coastline.

Following a “competitive tendering process”, the company was selected by North East Lincolnshire Council to come up with the plans for Cleethorpes, from North Promenade all the way up to Humberston Fitties, St Peter’s Avenue, and “all the bits in between”.

Yesterday afternoon, owner of HemingwayDesign, Wayne Hemingway, visited Cleethorpes and met with the leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Phillip Jackson.

Wayne said: “You have an amazing coastline here. There’s so much natural beauty, alongside the traditional seaside offering and opportunities to capitalise even more on the “staycation boom” and the desire to live “by the sea” that has been accelerated by the pandemic.”

The company are now asking for local people’s opinions on what they like about Cleethorpes, what they don’t, and what they’d like to see in the resort in the future.

Wayne continued: “Our first job is to listen to the people who know best, the residents, businesses, those that visit, those that know and love Cleethorpes and want to see it continue to be a great place as society evolves. We want to know what people think of what’s here, and what could be here in the future.

“We’re looking at everything, from how the resort looks, how it could feel in the future, what businesses could be here in the future and how the resort can purposefully evolve and respond to environmental, health and wellbeing and business issues.

“We want to really get under the skin of local perceptions and understand why people feel like they do.”

Cllr Philip Jackson, Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “Cleethorpes is a real jewel and along with local residents, businesses and indeed tourists, we have a unique chance to help shape the town’s future.

“We’re delighted to have Wayne and the team at HemingwayDesign and G L Hearn on board. In the last few years, they have shown that they really bring a community-focused approach to their work and a passion for improving things that matter to local people.

“We’re confident that they have the expertise and experience to deliver a masterplan that works for Cleethorpes, and I’m looking forward to working with Wayne and the team in the coming months.”

From now until Sunday 12 December, people can submit their views on Cleethorpes by filling out the online survey here.
