20-year-old given 3-year football ban for throwing bottles onto pitch

On Wednesday 17 November, a 20-year-old man was handed a 3-year football ban following a Scunthorpe United match earlier this year which saw him throwing bottles onto the pitch mid-game.

The original incident took place on Saturday 25 September.

The football banning order was accompanied by fines and fees totalling an impressive £419 following his appearance in court.

The judge reportedly called his actions ‘reckless and stupid’ and resulted in the game – which was against Port Vale – being ‘spoilt […] for the genuine supporters attending’.

The football ban means that the 20-year-old cannot attend any football matches in the UK for the next three years.

He was also ordered to hand in all of his travel documentation to prevent him from going to international matches too.

His conditions may also prohibit him from visiting certain towns or cities on league or international match days.

This also prevents him from being allowed in a group of more than three people on match days.

Superintendent Paul French with Humberside Police said: “I hope this court result shows people looking to attend matches and cause disruption that it absolutely won’t be tolerated.

“Not only has this man spoilt his own experience of football, as he will no longer be able to attend matches for the next three years, but he also dampened the experience of other home and away supporters who were trying to enjoy their game day.

“Football should be an opportunity for people to come together over one common love of the sport, and anyone who looks to disrupt or ruin that will be dealt with robustly and have to face the consequences.”

Humberside Police’s actions have set an example for others about how certain destructive behaviours will not be tolerated in a bid to keep the peace across the region.
