Council gets gold for support to Britain’s Armed Forces

North East Lincolnshire Council received the Gold standard under the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme.

This is the highest national accolade for showing support to Britain’s Armed Forces personnel who serve, are veterans and their families.

Cllr Ron Shepherd, Cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities, paid credit to the council and wider area, calling the award “great”.

“We are fully committed to supporting our nation’s Armed Forces community, and do everything we can to support those who serve as well as veterans and their families,” he added.

The Employee Recognition Scheme Gold Awards are the highest badge of honour for employers who support members of the Armed Forces by helping them secure employment and transition to civilian life.

Veterans and adult cadet force volunteers are already employed by the council and as part of the Gold award responsibilities they will now get special arrangements to help with their past and present links.

Veterans are also guaranteed interviews with prospective new employers, as long as they meet the minimum criteria for the job.

Alex Baxter, Armed Forces Champion for North East Lincolnshire, said that he was “delighted” for the council to receive this award, adding:

“The work that we do together to provide support for serving personnel, cadets, veterans, and their families is incredibly important, and grows in strength, year on year.”

The council received the award at a ceremony at Leeds Armouries last week.
