Little boy ‘shook up’ after being hit by unapologetic cyclist with no brakes

A five-year-old boy was “shook up” after being knocked over by a young cyclist with no working brakes whilst walking to school with his mum.

Oliver Major, 5, was knocked over a secondary schoolboy whilst walking to Thrunscoe Primary and Nursery School on Tuesday morning.

Oliver’s mum, Donna, picked him up and consoled him while the cyclist offered no apology.

“He didn’t say sorry, he just said that he didn’t have any brakes, so that’s why he didn’t stop,” she told Gi.

The cyclist, who Donna believes was in his teens, in school “years eight or nine”, rode off on his bike whilst she tried to console her “shook up” son.

The cyclist came from the path and hit Oliver as he and his mum were crossing Richmond Road, just a stone’s throw away from his school.

Cycling on the pavement is against the law under the Highway Act 1865, and is stated under section 64 of the Highway Code.

Oliver suffered no injuries from the incident, but was “shook up” and had to be “checked over” when they got to school.

Once she had dropped her son off at school, Donna contacted Cleethorpes Academy, who she believed was the school the cyclist went to.

She has said that they are aware of him riding a bike with no brakes and that they would suspend him, should they properly identify him.

Donna wanted to urge parents and all cyclists to make sure that they properly check that their bikes are fully-functional to avoid any future accidents.

“I want to warn people…this bike needs taking off [the road],” she added.

Cleethorpes Academy have been contacted for comment and have yet to respond.

Humberside Police have declined to comment, but referred to THINK! advice to cyclists, including “try to maintain a safe distance when you cycle.”
