Albion pub to be demolished for new flats and shop

The Albion pub in Grimsby is set to be demolished to make way for a new shop and self-contained flats.

Based on Cleethorpe Road, the Albion pub has been closed to the public for more than a decade, leaving the building to fall into disrepair and decay.

Now, North East Lincolnshire Council’s Planning Committee has given the green light to plans which will see the pub demolished.

The application was submitted by Mr Surrinder Mehat, owner of Metro C21 Stores Limited which is based in Bradford.

The new shop will be on the ground floor of a new three-storey building, with four self-contained flats above.

The planning report states: “The existing building has been seriously fire damaged and subject to extensive criminal damage and this has been witnessed on-site and the cost of renovating it and putting good the damage would likely to be excessive even if it was possible.

“Having regard to all considerations whilst the loss of the historic asset is somewhat regrettable, the case has been made for the redevelopment with a good quality building.

“The proposed replacement building is of good design and this would bring investment and vitality to an area which is in need of regeneration.”

Despite plans being given the go-ahead by the Council, some local residents have shared their dismay for the proposed shop and flats.

One resident wrote: “It seems such a waste of a beautiful building especially given the amount of warehouse type buildings available nearby already purpose built for storage. As a nearby resident, I object to this proposal. The Albion stands in a prominent position on the main road from Grimsby to
Cleethorpes surely the Council would want a building of this grandeur to be put to better use than
a Storeroom.”

Another resident shared: “Grimsby has lost so much in its heritage which in the past has been roughshod over by developers. This notable building on a primary route into the towns must be saved.

“The developers have exaggerated the drugs usage and building condition to gain approval for its demolition. The building could be cleared out and replacement floor boards etc could be replaced where required. I would not object to its demolition if the tiled frontages were preserved and incorporated in to any new build. This has been successfully carried out on numerous buildings in Hull and there is no reason why it cannot be done in Grimsby.”
