Highways England responds to ‘confusing’ speed cameras

Highways England have issued a response to concerns from motorists over the ‘confusing’ speed cameras situated on the A180.

Motorists have recently been left confused and anxious over the temporary speed cameras that have been placed down the A180 whilst roadworks are being carried out.

The signs advise motorists to travel at 40 mph while speed cameras are in use.

However, many ‘not in use’ signs have been placed next to the cameras, leaving motorists confused as to whether the speed limit is being enforced or not.

The roadworks- which began on 22 November – will see two miles of barriers installed, repaired drainage and upgraded road signage between the Stallingborough Interchange and Pyewipe roundabout.

National Highways Project Manager Steve Bishop said: “We are installing average speed cameras as part of essential maintenance and improvement work along the A180.

“Speed limits are sometimes reduced during road works to protect the workforce and to keep motorists safe. The speed limits are clearly signed and are currently enforceable by Humberside Police whether the speed cameras are in operation or not.

“Our advice to drivers is to take care through roadworks and comply with the speed limits in place.”

Not in use signs are placed next to speed cameras whilst they are calibrated and checked before going live.

The ‘not in use’ signs placed next to the speed cameras will be removed once the cameras are live this week.

The speed cameras will be kept in place until the roadworks are completed which is expected to be by the end of March 2022.
