Martin Vickers responds to MPs vote on new Covid measures
Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers has issued a response following the vote in parliament yesterday over new Covid measures.
The vote passed new measures which will see Covid passports, proof of a recent negative test or full vaccination must be shown to get into many large venues, including nightclubs, from Wednesday 15 December.
Despite a tory rebellion against the Prime Minister, the vote passed with 243 voting for and 99 voting against the measures.
In his statement Mr Vickers said: “I supported the Government in the votes as I believe the proposals were a proportionate response to the latest increase in Covid cases, particularly in respect of the new variant.”
“The most contentious issue was the so-called vaccine passports. They represent a minor and temporary restriction on our freedoms but they allow events to continue and, in most cases, for people to go about their lives relatively normally whilst offering some reassurance. Also there is provision for a lateral flow test for those who prefer it.”
“Overall I believe them to be in the best interests of my constituents. Though there are vocal opponents I am convinced that the overwhelming majority of those I represent support the measures.”
