Paul Hurst reveals ‘a number of’ Covid cases in Grimsby squad
Grimsby Town manager Paul Hurst has revealed that the club have detected “a number of cases” of Covid within the squad.
In an interview with BBC Radio Humberside, Paul Hurst revealed the news that will affect the team selection for the forthcoming games.
He said that he “expects” Saturday’s FA Trophy game against Stockport County to go ahead.
The club were affected with positive cases on the eve of the season, postponing their first league game of the season, against Bromley.
The Mariner’s Trust have confirmed that no player’s will be present at tonight’s (16 December) junior party.
Fellow National League clubs Chesterfield and Maidenhead United have withdrawn from the FA Trophy due to Covid cases, meaning that Guiseley and Maidstone United progress through.
The FA Trophy rules currently only allow for a five day ‘postponement window’ to get ties played, meaning that teams who can’t play because of cases are withdrawing from the competition entirely.
The EFL have released a statement saying that clubs “will be expected to play where it has 14 players, including a goalkeeper available”.
meanwhile, clubs at Steps three and four of non-league football were told at the start of the season that they must have 13 or fewer players available for a game to be postponed.
Omicron cases in the UK have been very concerning recently, with a record 78,610 positive cases being detected on Wednesday.
Grimsby Town FC and the National League have been contacted for comment.
