Historic fish and chip shop to receive renovation

The historic and beloved Mermaid fish and chip shop in Cleethorpes is set to receive a renovation.

Situated on North Promenade the works include replacing and repairing windows, doors, signage board and rainwater goods, repairs to columns and roof, replacing bird spikes and painting.

The Mermaid was built in 1883 as part of Cleethorpes railway station and is believed to have been a fish and chip restaurant since 1989.

The grade II listed building is loved by local residents and tourists alike, boasting huge queues come the summer season.

It displays a plaque that marks it as part of the local heritage trail on the North Promenade of the resort.

The 40-cover cafe has a distinctive blue and white Victorian facade and a five-star food hygiene rating.

Now the iconic shop is to receive much-needed renovations to keep up with the ageing process as well as the effects of seafront weather.

The Heritage Officer on the case stated that: “The Mermaid is an important building along the Cleethorpes Seafront, it reflects the importance and investment of the Railway and the formation of Cleethorpes as a popular seaside resort.

“Its significance is also reflected in its Grade II listed status and this application to sensitively repair and restore its external heritage is fully supported.”

North East Lincolnshire Council gave full approval for these works to be carried out within three years of the decision notice being made.
