Transit van thief caught hiding in rubbish bin

Following a police chase, a transit van thief was caught hiding in a rubbish bin 16 miles from the scene of the crime.

The Ford transit van was stolen in Scunthorpe on Christmas Day.

South Yorkshire Police had to take over the chase as it headed into Hatfield in Doncaster.

During the chase, the van reportedly crashed into bollards, a lamppost and a parked car.

The police reported that the culprit was found in a bin amongst the rubbish.

South Yorkshire Police’s operational support unit said: “It might have been Xmas Day but not everyone was out and about doing good so they can be on the list for next year’s presents.

“The transit van had just been stolen over in Scunthorpe.
“It was sighted by Humberside Police colleagues and failed to stop, heading into Hatfield in Doncaster.
“We took over and after a short time, the driver decided to try and ram it through some bollards, crashing into a lamppost and a parked car.
“He gave it the legs but with assistance of our trusty dog handler and our eye in the sky, he was located hiding in a bin with some of the afternoons leftovers.
“He was arrested for theft, dangerous driving and failing to stop.”
