Five-year-old Grimsby boy injured by e-scooter

On Monday 27 December, a five-year-old boy from Grimsby was injured by an e-scooter which was being ridden in a pedestrian area.

Humberside Police are making people aware of the laws that exist around electric scooters in order to protect the public in the future.

The incident took place on Victoria Street in Grimsby.

The boy received injuries to his face and legs which were treated at a nearby hospital.

He is now reportedly recovering at home.

According to Humberside Police, Safer Roads Humber said: “Whilst you can legally buy an e-scooter, it is against the law to ride your own scooter on the road, cycle lane or pavement.

“If stopped by the police, they could seize the e-scooter and you could get a fine and points on your driving licence.”

The force is reminding parents to educate their children about the laws surrounding e-scooters before they are allowed to ride them.

Privately owned scooters can only be used on private land with the permission of the landowner.

It is illegal for them to be used in public places which includes pavements, cycle paths and roads.

If they are, the rider could have the scooter taken away from them.

They may also receive a fine as well as penalty points on their license.

The force’s overall aim to keep members of the public safe, not take away their fun.
