Cycle Superhighway enters final stage after public backlash

North East Lincolnshire Council have shared that the Cycle Superhighway is about to enter its final stage of construction.

On Monday 17 January works will begin to oversee the third and final phase of the multi-million-pound Cycle Superhighway.

The final stretch of the highway will be installed along the A1173, which runs from the CATCH training facility leading across Kings Road and linking to Pelham Road junction.

Works are estimated to take three months with temporary traffic signals being put in place.

Noth East Lincolnshire Council said: “North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner EQUANS will oversee the third and final phase of the multi-million-pound Cycle Superhighway, with work set to begin on Monday 17 January.

“Following a competitive tender process, contractor CR Reynolds has been appointed to install the remaining part of the highway along the stretch of the A1173, which runs from the CATCH training facility leading across Kings Road and linking to the existing cycleway at the Pelham Road junction.

“Work will take around three months to complete. Temporary traffic signals will be in place to allow road users to travel in either direction along the route.

“Engineers at Northern Powergrid will be working alongside the contractor to install electricity cables along this final section of the cycle route.”

The highway has previously come under fire from the public, with some stating that the multi-million-pound project is not needed.

Many motorists have argued that the money is being spent on ‘something that isn’t needed’ and that the cycle highway is just ‘a big inconvenience.’

Road users also raised concerns on whether or not enough cyclists will use the superhighway upon its completion.

According to figures released by North East Lincolnshire Council, the project is worth a total of £2.6m, with £400,000 contributed by the council and private sector.

Although Gi Media has repeatedly requested financial information such as a feasibility study on the roadworks, no information has been released.
