Emergency rescue for squirrel stuck in drain

Emergency rescue for squirrel stuck in drain

Yesterday evening (10 January) at 4:30 pm Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue received a call from a concerned member of the public that a squirrel has sadly got its head stuck in a drain cover.

Despite attempts to remove it safely, the rescue team soon realised that they needed extra services to help the poor creature.

Humberside Fire and Rescue were soon on the scene and managed to help the rescue team remove the squirrel safely.

Unfortunately, after being removed from the drain it became clear that the squirrel was in very bad health.

It is now being cared for until it is back to its normal health when it will be given to an animal sanctuary with licenced holders.

Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue Said: “At 16:30 we received a call on our emergency number for a squirrel with its head stuck through a drain cover in Grimsby. On arrival, attempts were made to remove the squirrel safely but it quickly became apparent that it wasn’t coming out on its own.

“It’s very rare that we call for additional services on a rescue (over thousands of calls, this is only the second time emergency services had been required) on this occasion it was necessary for this squirrel to have any hope of escape.

“Thank you to Humberside Fire and Rescue for their support and assistance, with their help we managed to get the squirrel out!

“Currently the squirrel is in intensive care and is very poorly but it’s in the best hands now.

“Thank you to the member of the public who called and waited for our arrival, this helps us locate any injured animal quicker! We can only hope this squirrel has the determination to pull through!

“As an important note, if you find any animal in a similar situation, please DO NOT call 999. The fire service will only deploy to wildlife from verified sources such as the RSPCA or known wildlife rescues (such as us) as this is ALWAYS a last resort! Call your local rescue service or the RSPCA if you have an emergency like this so we can attempt a rescue first.”
