PM confirms he did attend garden party following calls for his resignation
In today’s PM’s Questions, Boris Johnson is facing mounting pressure to respond to claims regarding the lockdown garden party which took place at Downing Street in May 2020.
Mr Johnson opened the questions with an apology to the public, he acknowledged the ‘anguish’ the public have faced over the past 18 months and the ‘rage’ they feel towards the government.
He said he ‘believed implicitly’ that the lockdown garden party was a work event, but that he should have taken action when he realised this wasn’t the case.
He asked that inquiry be carried out in full before he comments further on the situation.
Kier Starmer mocked the Prime Minister’s defence that he ‘didn’t know he was at a party.’
Starmer asked: “Is the Prime Minister going to do the decent thing and resign?'”
The Prime Minister responded with the same statement that he believed the party was a work event and that he regrets he did not do things differently that evening.
He said Starmer should not preempt the conclusion of the official enquiry but made no further comment on the current calls for his resignation.
Kier Starmer went on to ask why Boris Johnson doesn’t feel like the rules apply to him following the resignation of ex-health secretary Matt Hancock and former adviser Allegra Stratton over breaking covid rules.
He concluded his questions to the Prime Minister asking will the public kick him out, will the Tory party kick him out or will the Prime Minister “do the decent thing and resign?”
Mr Johnson refused to comment on his resignation, once again asking for the inquiry to be carried out in full before any further decisions are made.
Other MP’s expressed their own anger and the anger of their constituents over the lockdown party, once again calling for Mr Johnson’s resignation.
Stephen Farry MP said today’s apology from the PM is “too little too late” and that if Mr Johnson was sincere he could have apologised at any stage over the last 18 months instead of waiting until he was found out.
The PM says he grieves for everybody who has died and suffered but asks Farry to wait for the inquiry to report, the very same answer he gave Labour leader Kier Starmer and other local MP’s.
