Scunthorpe hospital receives new MRI scanner

Scunthorpe General Hospital’s improvement works are progressing smoothly as they receive a new MRI scanner for their site.

The new equipment was delivered to the hospital’s newly improved unit on Sunday 9 January.

The unit will be able to welcome patients as early as next month, the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLaG) reported.

Director of Estates and Facilities, Jug Johal, told the trust: “This was a really exciting development in the £4.6 million extension of our Scunthorpe MRI suite, which is a key aspect of our ongoing work to improve our buildings and facilities on the site.”

He added: “Having this additional scanner in place will enable us to offer you a vastly improved service.

“It will double our scanning capacity at Scunthorpe, allowing our specialist clinicians to see you more quickly, diagnose and monitor conditions and get you the treatment you need.

“It will also increase our capability to carry out a wide range of specialist scans, while the addition of new anaesthetic and recovery areas and additional monitoring equipment means that patients being treated in Intensive Care will no longer have to be taken over to Grimsby for scans.”

The new MRI table will be able to drop down lower, making it easier for patients to get into position and rest comfortably.

Fresh Sky Inside ceiling panels and a calming mural spread across one wall will also accompany the changes to make patients feel as comfortable as possible during their stay.

Improvements to their consulting room, waiting area and changing facilities are set to become more ‘inviting and relaxing’ as well.

Additionally, their new Emergency Department is set to open in 2023.
