Johnson is safe in his job, says Education Secretary

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi has denied the prime minister is in any danger over his handling of lockdown-breaking parties which are alleged to have taken place at Downing Street last year.

Prime minister Boris Johnson continues to face increasing pressure to resign amid the ongoing scandal.

But speaking to the BBC, Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi said that he felt Boris Johnson’s role as prime minister was safe.

This comes after the prime minister admitted attending a social event in the Downing Street garden during lockdown.

When directly asked whether Mr Johnson was safe in his job, Mr Zahawi said:

“Yes, he is because he’s human and we make mistakes and actually he came to the despatch box and apologised and said he will we absolutely submit himself to parliament when [the Sue Gray investigation] is concluded.

“Boris Johnson has done the right thing to apologise.”

Despite Mr Zahawi’s confidence, Labour, the Liberal Democrats and SNP are all calling on the prime minister to resign.

Six Conservative MPs have also publicly declared they have no confidence in Mr Johnson’s ability to lead.
