Former Brexit secretary tells Johnson ‘in the name of God, go’

David Davis, former Brexit secretary has emphatically urged Boris Johnson to resign in a heated exchange during PMQ’s.

The former front bencher said: “I spent the last weeks and months defending the Prime Minister, often to angry constituents. I reminded them of his success in delivering Brexit and the vaccine.

“But I expect my leaders to shoulder the responsibility for the actions they take, yesterday he did the opposite.

“In the name of God, go.”

The quote holds significant importance as it is from the Norway debate in 1940 which sealed Neville Chamberlain’s resignation.

David Davis is one of the most senior Tory politicians to join calls for the PM to resign, joining the Leader of the Scottish Conservatives Douglas Ross.

Replying to Davis, Johnson said that he “takes full responsibility for everything done in this government, throughout the pandemic.”

He also batted away calls for his resignation, apologised for the parties and urged people to wait for Sue Gray’s report into the Downing Street parties.

Labour leader Keir Starmer said the PM was providing “absurd and unreliable defences” for the No 10 parties which continued to “unravel”.

When asked on the specific issues of his knowledge of the parties, Johnson said Starmer was “wasting his, ours and the public’s time” on asking questions that will be answered in the inquiry report.

Johnson said that he was “proud” of his staff for their work during the pandemic with the “fastest-growing economy in the G7” and praised their work in the vaccine rollout.

He also claimed that the country would still be in lockdown if Labour were in power, adding: “we delivered while they dithered.”

PMQ’s was slightly overshadowed by Bury South MP Chrsitian Wakeford‘s decision to switch from the Conservatives to the Labour Party just 10 minutes before the start of the session.

He said that he was “embarrassed” by the government and the “disgraceful way” the PM has conducted himself.
