‘Homophobia still exists in football’ says former GTFC manager Ian Holloway
Former Grimsby Town manager Ian Holloway has told spoken out about the problem of homophobia in football as part of a new Channel 4 documentary titled ‘Football Coming Out’.
In the documentary Holloway said that although the problem still exists, he would encourage gay players to come out and dismiss the opinions of those who respond negatively.
“You have meetings, you talk about it with the team. I think it would be a total relief at the end of that,” he continued.
“Anybody in the group who was negative towards that I would get rid of, without a shadow of a doubt, because they are not a human being that I would want to put my name to.”
“I would encourage them to be their authentic self.”
The documentary, which aired last night, aims to challenge the experience of gay players within the sport and the surrounding.
This statement comes at a time when there are no openly gay players in the Football League.
Football’s Coming Out is now available on All 4.
