Grimsby’s new Youth Zone granted £2.7m windfall

A project aimed at developing a new Youth Zone for Grimsby’s young people has received a major boost in the form of £2.7m in lottery funding.

Planning permission was granted by North East Lincolnshire Council last May.

Improved funds now mean building at the site on Garth Lane has now been pushed forward to this summer, and Horizon Youth Zone should be ready to open in 2024!

Around £2.2m of the funding will support the renovation of a former flour mill into the new Youth Zone, with the rest going towards a longer-term heritage scheme and activities for young people.

Once open, the centre will be open seven days a week to young people aged between 8 and 19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs.

For just 50p a visit, members of the Horizon Youth Zone will be able to access an indoor climbing wall, four-court sports hall, fully equipped gym and 3G kick pitch.

The centre will also include a training kitchen, dance and drama studio, arts and crafts room, music room with a recording studio and an enterprise and employability suite, among many other features.

Former Young People Development Group member, now trainee youth worker at OnSide, Izzy Russell, said “To be a teenager growing up in Grimsby, it’s been amazing how much I’ve been involved in this project.

“It just shows that young people are at the core of Horizon Youth Zone. I want to say a huge thank you to The National Lottery Heritage Fund for this incredible grant, it means a lot.

“Without a shadow of a doubt the youth of Grimsby have some exciting things to look forward to.”

Councillor Callum Procter, cabinet member for Economic Growth, Housing and Tourism at North East Lincolnshire Council, added: “This project is representative of this borough’s drive to invest in our children and young people.

“They are our adults of tomorrow, and we are determined to overcome the challenges that we have within areas of our community to improve the opportunities for them.”
