What Grimsby’s young people have to say about new Youth Zone

A youth zone is currently under development situated on the Garth Lane site.

“We are young people from Grimsby who have a positive vision for the area”

A national lottery heritage fund of £2.7m was provided to create a space for the Horizon Youth Zone.

“Horizon Youth Zone members will have access to an indoor climbing wall, four court sports hall, training kitchen, music room with a recording studio, fully equipped gym, dance and drama studio, 3G kick pitch, arts and crafts room, enterprise and employability suite, combined with support from skilled youth workers.”.

The boats a capacity of 6000 members and employment of 60 staff, including recruiting a youth worker.

1600 people voted for Horizon to front the project.

The organisation hopes to rejuvenate the heritage area of the docks whilst providing a centre for the 28000 local youths.

“The logo features the Dock tower which shows the heritage of Grimsby”

A block on the infamous ‘Kasbah’ will also be home to creative spaces for local artists and businesses.

“Horizon Youth Zone is a brand new charity set to provide a safe, inspiring place for young people aged 8-19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs”

“Our youth zone will be unique because it will be built on a heritage site that otherwise would be lost”

The group hopes to create a link “Connecting a historical waterfront to the town”

Regular workshops will be run to help young people improve their skills.

A local artist Trevor Harris is also involved in the project.

The youth group are also creating a time capsule and hope to produce a short film about the story of Grimsby. They will also create a ‘Heritage Trail’.

“We will connect young people to our friends in the historic fishing and whaling of New Bedford, Boston, MA”

The development will aim to bring young people together and provide a creative space, giving young people options and creative opportunity: “Carrying the story forward for the future generations”.

Ultimately the funding aims to help connect the Youth Zone and its young people with a broader, heritage-led transformation of Grimsby town.
